Hard Drive Woes

I like OS X, I really do, but I can't stand the Finder. Is there any reason why copying 10,000 files that are 80GB should crash the Finder? It's insane. Using cp in the terminal works just fine and is about 100x faster to boot, but sometimes a guy just wants to drag and drop, and not have to type. Well I learned my lesson. Doing that not only crashes the Finder, it fucks up your hard drive as well. Now I have random files missing on my firewire disk, not even sure which ones. Thankfully I have most of this stuff backed up, but I'm sure I lost some of it.
I think it's time to finally turn my G4 into a file server and add that raid array to it. Then I won't have to worry about backups anymore (or as much). Of course that means I'd have to ditch the Console Emulation Station, which means I'd have to buy a Mac Mini to replace it with. Bah, that's a bit of dough at a time when I'm trying to save for a wedding. Seems like a neccessary evil though, as I have no idea how much damage I've really done to this thing, and buying yet another firewire drive will cost $$ anyway. *sigh*
Update: Just occurred to me that I could just keep the CES on the G4 and add a few more HD's to it, and only make the new HD's a raid array. Basically the G4 could do double duty. That would save a lot of money with the same benefit.
Anyone wanna buy a couple 250GB Firewire hard drives?
