For all you Atari freaks ([livejournal.com profile] vanadium_77), on eBay now is a rare Nolan Bushnell Signature Series Atari 7800.

Great you say, it's just some 7800 with a different case. Which technically it is, but according to the description this is a preproduction unit that was being tested to be released as new.

Which at first thought sounds cool. Sorta like when they re-released the die-cast Voltron. But upon further thinking, this is really curious. Why re-release the 7800? What the hell are you going to play on it?

Most people would probably play 2600 games on it, as those games are the most abundant, but it's not like there is a lack of 2600 consoles for sale. But it's a curious thing to sell without any games.

Also, who would be releasing it? This just doesn't seem to be something the Infogrames Atari would produce, especially since they already released the Atari Flashback and the like. From a marketing perspective it seems like a strange item. I suppose that's why it was canned.

Be interesting to see how much this thing goes for. Atari fans are a rabid bunch.

I am proud to say that I was once an owner of the 7800 back in the day, and chose it over the NES at the time. In my mind, Xevious > Super Mario Bros, and the systems attatched with them.

... Till the superior Xevious port came out for the NES. But I digress. Anyhow, yeah, thta system looks HAWT.
