Jaedong vs Flash
May. 28th, 2010 10:11 amI'm seriously considering waking up at 3am tonight to watch the Jaedong vs Flash, Starcraft 1 MSL finals live from South Korea. This is for a few reasons. One, Jaedong and Flash are ranked #1 and #2 in the world at Starcraft and have been for a couple years running. This is a rematch of their finals from last year, which apparently was one of the best SC1 matches ever...until the power went out. They say they've taken steps to eliminate this possibility this year. There hasn't been a rematch of an MSL finals since the very beginning of the league (circa 2002) and gameplay has changed drastically since then.
Also, I'm fairly fascinated by competitive e-sports. Well at least with regards to SC. Watching, say, Doom 3 or Counter Strike just doesn't do it for me. WoW Arena is ok, but barely much better. Something about an RTS seems perfect as a spectator sport though. There's action, but also strategy and counters, not just twitch reflexes.
I'm also interested in seeing what it looks like at the event site. For those wondering, here is where it's taking place:

That many people packed into a building to watch two people play Starcraft?! It's like another world somehow. Everyone's seen the SFIII match between Justin and Daigo at EVO 2004, but the crowd there pales in comparison to this. Plus Jaedong vs Flash is nationally televised. I can't imagine the pressure.
Lastly, with SC2 coming out, and Blizzard taking over e-sports in S. Korea, who knows what the future holds for SC1 progaming. This could be the match to end all matches for the original game. If I can get my ass out of bed and find a good stream, I'm there.
