So
symbioid and I have been playing quite a bit of Starcraft lately (the original, not the SC2 beta). I got the game not that long ago, around the time when hype for SC2 was starting to generate. I had always heard it was a good game but just never really got around to playing it.
I'm currently stuck on the last Zerg mission, after having completed all the Terran ones. I think I can get it, it will probably just take some time. That said, I really wanted to try multiplayer and knew if I attempted anything on Batte.net that I'd get rolled. So when Dave said he'd be willing to hit it up online I jumped at the chance.
Amazingly we're really even. So far we're 3-3. We totally suck and play turtle games that take an hour and a half, but it's a heck of a lot of fun. And I think over time we've gotten better. So far Dave hast just played Terran. I've played a mix of Terran and Zerg. I do better at Zerg but it's only because I'm on that mission and I am more familiar with it currently.
It's been said many times, but the game is simply amazing at its balance. After every fight we chat a bit and one of us will be PO'd about one unit or another and how it utterly destroyed us. Only for us to figure out ways for each other to beat it.
For example, last night I totally owned Dave with massive Guardian pushes. Their range was too much. Dave cursed them. But as I said, Guardians can't hit air units and they're slow. Throw a group of Wraiths at them and they will go down super easy. Next time I expect he will do this.
I've been watching lots of film from pro players of SC1 and now of SC2 explain things. Most of it is over my head, but the thing I keep coming back to is their point about playing with a friend. Someone who is about your level you can just try shit on, a move, a tactic, whatever, over and over again until you figure out a way to combat it. I think there's something to that. I feel like I'm a much better player (relatively speaking) just after these 6 games with Dave than I would have been otherwise.
Since I'm weak at Terran and Dave is going through the Zerg campaign right now, next time we're gonna mix it up. He goes Zerg, I go Terran. I think that will be interesting to say the least. We'll see how much he turtles with Zerg. ;) No Protoss yet, neither one of us are close to being that far (though a Protoss vs Protoss match with two players who know nothing about that could be fun ;).
