Pop vs Soda

There are many differences between Minnesotans and Wisconsinites. For example, Minnesotans hate everything about Wisconsin (actually I think they just hate everything not Minnesota). Also, Minnesotans call soft drinks "pop", whereas where I grew up in Wisconsin it was called "soda". This seems to always come up in conversation here.

Well apparently someone did a national study on what people refer to soft drinks as. Here's a big map with the results (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] helveticore).

Looks like Wisconsin is about split, but the part I grew up in (north east) is pretty soda heavy. East and west coast are pretty soda heavy too as well as St. Louis which I find odd. It's always funny seeing these little pockets of dialect. Even eastern Wisconsin is a little pocket surrounded by poppers.

In a way that makes sense. I mean we did call drinking fountains "bubblers" where I grew up. Belgians, Germans and Polocks have some fairly interesting sayings.

Anyway, the crazy thing on the map is how many people say "Coke" for any soft drink. I've heard people use this before but I had no idea how prevalent it was. Of course it's in the south. They always gotta do things different down there.
