Revolution Specs
Mar. 30th, 2006 10:16 amIGN posted leaked specs on the Revolution. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. First of all here are the Rev specs:
CPU - 729 Mhz
GPU - 243 Mhz
RAM - 88 MB
To put this in perspective, here are the Gamecube specs:
CPU - 485 Mhz
GPU - 162 Mhz
RAM - 40 MB
Do the math, the clock speeds are exactly 50% faster than the GC. Yeah, the next gen that we waited 5 years for is going to give us only a 50% increase in power. W. T. F.
I understand they are trying to make the machine small, and I don't expect it to have three 3.2Ghz procs like the Xbox 360 has. But this isn't even an upgrade. It's like a repackaged GC they expect us to buy all over again.
To me it just looks like Nintendo is being an incredible cheap ass. There's no reason they couldn't have the specs be a 1.3Ghz CPU, 333Mhz GPU and 128 MB of RAM. I think that's what most people expected. It would still be underpowered but at least a decent increase from the GC and could still be sold at very cheap prices.
I realize it's not all about horsepower and I am excited about the remote, the wifi, the virtual console and all that. But I can't help but have 32X flashbacks. Trying to be next gen but just not even coming close. Even the DS, while seeming underpowered next to the PSP, was a leap in tech (SNES to N64 in quality).
I guess there's nothing really for a guy like me next gen. I don't need PS3 power, and I'm not willing to pay PS3 or X360 prices. And the Rev isn't really next gen at all. Where's the nice normal next gen upgrade for $200 at launch? Bah.
