I've been meaning to see this movie for a while, and since I had the day off I had the opportunity to sit down and finally watch Primer. Not that I've seen many movies this year, but this is easily the best of that bunch.

It's certainly a different film. First off, it was done for $7000, and looks every bit as good as a full budget film. None of the actors had ever acted before, and while you can tell on some of the extras, for the most part the acting is great. I think a lot of that had to do with the style of the dialogue. It's mostly like regular conversations. People get interrupted, people pause for thought, it's certainly not canned like most deliveries are.

The dialogue and the entire film is decidedly geeky. Right from the start they are talking about math and physics. Soon they're discussing much deeper and philosophical issues, and much later time itself starts to warp. It's one of those out-of-sequence films that you sort of have to piece together. But the cool thing about it is it doesn't hold your hand at all. There is no foreshadowing, you're expected to figure it out on your own.

Personally, I love that about it. It's a film for people who like to solve problems, because the film is a problem in which to solve by itself. Thankfully its short (80 mins) so I was able to watch it twice and get more out of it. I'm sure it'll take a couple more sessions to really piece together how it all works.

Anyway, anyone who's into sci-fi time paradox type stuff that bends your mind in 20 different ways should watch it. You really need to concentrate, but it's worth it. Great movie.
